The Rock Cycle

When the Earth first cooled, its molten crust solidified to form igneous rock.

Igneous means ‘formed by fire’. Initially there was no other type of rock. Over thousands and millions of years, two other types of rock were created. These were sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks. The rock cycle diagram shows how these rocks are forming today.
